MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery)
MBBS is the foundation of a medical career. It combines years of intensive study with clinical postings in hospitals and a compulsory rotating internship. Admission is through NEET-UG, and fees vary enormously between government and private colleges — both facts shape how families should plan.
- Duration
- About 5.5 years including a 1-year compulsory rotating internship
- Eligibility
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English; minimum age 17
- Admission
- NEET-UG followed by MCC and state counselling

Course overview
The MBBS curriculum, prescribed by the National Medical Commission, is competency-based and divided into professional phases. Pre-clinical subjects come first, followed by para-clinical and clinical subjects, with early and increasing exposure to patients.
After completing the internship and registering with the State Medical Council or NMC, graduates can practise as doctors or pursue postgraduate specialisation. See Doctor (Medical Practitioner) for the full career picture.
