NATA and JEE Main Paper 2 (Architecture)

About the exam

NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) assesses aptitude for architecture — drawing and visualisation, observation, reasoning and basic mathematics. It is accepted by most architecture colleges across India and can be taken more than once in a year, with the rules on valid scores set by the Council of Architecture.

JEE Main Paper 2A is the B.Arch paper of JEE Main, used for admission to NITs, Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) and some other centrally funded and state institutes through JoSAA and other counselling. It includes Mathematics, an aptitude section and a drawing section. Paper 2B is used for B.Planning.

Eligibility (general)

• For B.Arch admission: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and minimum marks prescribed by the Council of Architecture, or an eligible diploma with Mathematics
• Eligibility to sit NATA may be broader than eligibility for admission; always check both
• JEE Main Paper 2A follows NTA's eligibility conditions plus JoSAA admission criteria

Exam pattern

Syllabus overview

Mathematics questions follow the Class 11–12 syllabus. Aptitude sections test visual perception, spatial reasoning, understanding of buildings and materials, observation and general awareness about architecture. Drawing sections test the ability to sketch objects, compose scenes, understand proportion, perspective, light and shade, and represent ideas visually.

Courses and institutions it leads to

NATA scores are used by the large majority of architecture colleges across states, including state government and private colleges. JEE Main Paper 2A ranks are used for NITs and SPAs through JoSAA, and by some state counselling processes. IITs that offer B.Arch use JEE Advanced followed by an Architecture Aptitude Test.

3. Take the testsMany students take NATA more than once to improve their score.
4. CounsellingJoSAA for NITs and SPAs; state and institute counselling for most others, usually combining NATA with Class 12 marks.

How to prepare

1. Draw every dayPractise freehand sketching, perspective, proportion and composition. Speed and clarity matter.
2. Observe buildings and spacesNotice materials, forms, light and how people use spaces; aptitude questions reward this awareness.
3. Revise Class 11–12 MathematicsEspecially for JEE Paper 2A, where mathematics carries substantial weight.
4. Practise visual reasoningWork on 3D visualisation, mirror images, pattern completion and object folding.
5. Take timed drawing testsSimulate exam conditions and ask a teacher or architect for feedback.

After the result

Compare colleges on studio culture, faculty, recognition by the Council of Architecture, infrastructure, exposure to live projects and fees. B.Arch is a five-year commitment, so fit matters. See Architect for what the career involves.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Leaving drawing practice until the final months
• Assuming B.Arch has no mathematics requirement
• Not checking which exam each target college uses
• Ignoring Council of Architecture recognition of the college
