JEE Main and JEE Advanced
JEE is the best-known engineering entrance in India. It has two stages: JEE Main, which opens admission to NITs, IIITs and many other institutes, and JEE Advanced, which is the gateway to the IITs. Understanding how the two connect helps you plan realistically.
- Conducted by
- JEE Main: National Testing Agency (NTA). JEE Advanced: one IIT each year, by rotation
- Leads to
- B.Tech / B.E. at NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and many others (Main); IITs (Advanced)
- Subjects
- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
- Sessions
- JEE Main is usually held in two sessions a year; JEE Advanced once
About the exam
JEE Main is a computer-based national test for undergraduate engineering admissions. Its scores are used for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), other centrally funded technical institutes and many state and private institutions. It is also the qualifying step for JEE Advanced.
JEE Advanced is taken only by a limited number of top performers in JEE Main and is used for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and a few other institutes. It is widely regarded as one of the most challenging entrance exams in the country.
JEE Main also has a separate paper for B.Arch and B.Planning admissions — see NATA and JEE Main Paper 2 (Architecture).
Who takes this exam
- Students in Class 11–12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (MPC / PCM)
- Students aiming for B.Tech at NITs, IIITs or IITs
- Students applying to state or private colleges that accept JEE Main scores
Eligibility (general)
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics, plus Chemistry or another permitted subject — as specified in the current bulletin
- JEE Main can generally be attempted in the year of passing Class 12 and the following two years; check the current rules
- JEE Advanced: only candidates who rank within the qualifying cut-off in JEE Main (paper for B.E./B.Tech) can register; limits apply on age and number of attempts
- Admission to NITs, IIITs and similar institutes also usually requires minimum Class 12 marks or a top-percentile position in your board, as per current JoSAA rules
Exam pattern
| Feature | JEE Main (B.E./B.Tech paper) | JEE Advanced |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-based test | Computer-based test |
| Papers | One paper | Two compulsory papers on the same day |
| Duration | 3 hours | 3 hours per paper |
| Question types | Multiple-choice and numerical-answer questions | Varied formats that change from year to year — single and multiple correct answers, numerical answers, matching |
| Marking | Marks for correct answers, deductions for wrong answers | Scheme varies by question type and year, including partial and negative marking |
| Result | Percentile score and rank | Rank lists by category |
Syllabus overview
Both exams are based on the Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics syllabi. JEE Main's syllabus is aligned broadly with the NCERT curriculum; JEE Advanced covers similar topics but tests deeper conceptual understanding and multi-step problem-solving.
Always use the official syllabus published for your exam year, because topics are occasionally added or removed.

Courses and institutions it leads to
JEE Main: NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes through JoSAA counselling; many state government colleges and private universities also use JEE Main scores or ranks.
JEE Advanced: all IITs, plus a small number of other institutes that use JEE Advanced ranks for specific programmes.
Branches commonly chosen include Computer Science and AI & Data Science, electronics, mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. See Career Options After Class 12 MPC for the wider picture.
How the process usually works
- Register for JEE MainApply online for one or both sessions within the dates announced by NTA.
- Take JEE MainYour best score across sessions is generally used for ranking, as per current rules.
- Qualify for JEE Advanced (optional)If you are within the qualifying cut-off, register for JEE Advanced.
- Results and ranksJEE Main and JEE Advanced publish separate ranks.
- JoSAA counsellingFill in choices of institutes and branches. Seats are allotted over several rounds based on rank, category and preferences.
- Other counsellingState counselling, CSAB special rounds and private university admissions run alongside or afterwards.
How to prepare
- Master the Class 11 and 12 syllabusStrong understanding of NCERT concepts is the foundation; then move to harder problems.
- Practise under timed conditionsSolve previous papers and full-length mock tests in the computer-based format.
- Analyse mistakesTrack errors by topic and type — conceptual, careless or time-related — and revisit them weekly.
- Balance board examsBoard marks matter for eligibility and for other admissions; do not neglect them.
- Protect health and sleepTwo years of preparation is long. Regular breaks, exercise and sleep improve performance.
After the result
JoSAA counselling allocates seats at IITs, NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes. Choosing and ordering preferences carefully is as important as the rank itself: think about branch interest, institute quality, location and fees.
Students who do not get a preferred seat can consider state engineering counselling (for example through EAPCET), other national exams such as BITSAT, private university admissions or a B.Sc route — see Career Options After Class 12 MPC.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying only on JEE and ignoring state and university exams
- Neglecting board exams and eligibility criteria
- Choosing a branch purely by popularity during counselling
- Using too many study sources instead of mastering a few well
- Taking mock-test scores as fixed predictions rather than feedback
Alternatives and backup options
- State engineering entrance tests such as TS/AP EAPCET
- BITSAT and other university entrance tests
- B.Sc, B.Stat or BCA routes — see Career Options After B.Sc
- B.Arch through NATA
- Defence careers through NDA
Frequently asked questions
Is coaching necessary for JEE?
Not necessarily. Many students prepare successfully through self-study, school support and online resources. What matters is consistent practice, good material and honest analysis of mistakes.
What is the difference between percentile and marks in JEE Main?
A percentile shows the percentage of candidates in your session who scored equal to or below you. It is not the same as the percentage of marks you scored.
Can I get into an NIT without JEE Advanced?
Yes. NIT admissions are based on JEE Main ranks through JoSAA counselling. JEE Advanced is required only for IITs.
How many times can I attempt JEE Advanced?
A limited number of attempts in consecutive years is permitted, along with age conditions. Check the current JEE Advanced information brochure.
